Before You Buy Another “Cortisol-Lowering” Supplement, Read This
You're tired.
You're waking up at 3 a.m. Your patience is shorter than usual. Your energy crashes in the afternoon and you don't quite feel like yourself.
Then you open Instagram.
A Reel tells you it could be cortisol.
Suddenly you're searching symptoms and wondering which supplement you should order.
Before another bottle makes its way into your wellness cabinet, there are a few things worth knowing.
Cortisol Isn't the Enemy
Cortisol has become one of those wellness words that sounds automatically bad.
But cortisol is an essential hormone made by your adrenal glands. It plays roles throughout the body, including your stress response, metabolism and blood-pressure regulation.
You need cortisol.
The issue isn't that cortisol exists. It's whether your levels are actually abnormal—and that's something a social-media checklist can't determine.
Symptoms Aren't a Diagnosis
Fatigue.
Poor sleep.
Feeling overwhelmed.
Irritability.
Changes in appetite or weight.
These experiences matter, but they can have many possible explanations.
So recognizing yourself in a “signs your cortisol is high” post doesn't necessarily tell you why you're feeling that way.
When a healthcare provider has reason to investigate a cortisol disorder, cortisol can be assessed through blood, urine or saliva testing, with further evaluation depending on the situation.
Instead of immediately asking:
Which supplement lowers cortisol?
Try asking:
What am I actually experiencing?
Before You Add Another Supplement, Ask Yourself These Four Things
1. What am I trying to change?
Be specific.
Are you trying to sleep better?
Have steadier energy?
Feel less overwhelmed?
Understand why your body feels different?
“I need to lower my cortisol” may be a theory.
The symptom you're experiencing is the useful starting point.
2. Where did the cortisol idea come from?
Did your healthcare provider bring it up?
Or did a Reel describe several things you've been experiencing?
There's nothing wrong with being curious about your health.
But curiosity doesn't require turning every possibility into a treatment plan.
3. Am I already taking several things?
Take a look at what you're already using before adding something else.
Supplements can have side effects and interact with medications or other supplements, and in the U.S. the FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they're marketed in the same way it approves drugs.
Sometimes understanding what you're already taking is more useful than immediately adding another product.
4. What else is happening in my life?
Maybe you're managing kids, work, appointments, meals and aging parents.
Maybe you're waking at night because your mind won't stop running through tomorrow.
Maybe you've simply been carrying too much for too long.
That doesn't mean you should dismiss physical symptoms as “just stress.”
It means your circumstances are useful information too.
You Don't Need to Become Better at Guessing
Wellness can turn us into full-time detectives.
Is it cortisol?
Hormones?
Magnesium?
Blood sugar?
Perimenopause?
Something you're eating?
Something you're not eating?
Suddenly every symptom becomes another rabbit hole.
But the goal isn't to become better at guessing.
It's to understand yourself better.
Notice what you're experiencing.
Pay attention to patterns.
Write things down if that's helpful.
And if symptoms are persistent, significantly changing or concerning you, bring that information to an appropriate healthcare professional rather than relying on social media to diagnose the cause.
Start With Curiosity, Not Another Bottle
If every new symptom has been sending you down another Google or Instagram rabbit hole, try a different starting point.
Not:
What should I buy?
But:
What am I noticing? What keeps repeating? What feels supportive?

Because sometimes the next thing you need isn't another answer in a bottle.
